美國職棒術語轉成日常英文

自從王建民進入美國職棒大聯盟，棒球迷開始注意每一季節各球隊的戰績，球賽轉播中可以聽到各種專業術語。棒球是美國人最喜歡的運動之一，因此棒球運動中的術語，有很多被融入了日常的成語與俚語中。這一篇文章裡，我們介紹一些從棒球術語中，轉變成日常成語的的一些字、詞。

Ballpark ： 棒球場的意思。

Ballpark 指的是指大型的棒球場。 例如亞特蘭大勇士隊 (Atlanta Braves) 的主場 Turner Field  就是一個典型 Ballpark 。什麼是「棒球場數字」（ Ballpark Figures ）呢，就是當天到場觀賽的觀眾人數。因為開賽時到場觀眾人數並不能精確掌握，只能猜個大概，因此 Ballpark  Figures 就變成「大概的數量」了。

例句 1 ： Jeff, could you predict the next month sales volume of shoes, I only need ballpark figures. 傑夫，你能預測下個月的鞋子銷售量嗎？我只要個大概的數字就夠了。其他類似的用法

Bat Five Hundred ： 打擊率五成的意思。

例句 ： If you could solve 10 problems out of 20 in average, you are batting five hundred. 假如你每 20 題答對 10 題的話，你得成功率是 50% 。

Bat the Eyes ： 指女孩眨眼放電。

例句 ： Jenny Is good at batting her eyes when dating boys. 珍妮在和男孩約會時善於眨眼放電。

Bat a Thousand ： 打擊 1000 次。指表現超出預期。

例句 ： Gloria felt she was batting a thousand. She'd got everything she asked for from her boss. 葛羅利亞自認表現不俗。她從老闆那裡得到了她所想要的每一件東西。

Big League : 原指各個職業棒球聯盟，後來被轉成「在某一領域中的菁英或領袖」。

例句 ： Winning the latest design award puts Richard in the Big League. 贏得本屆設計獎，讓李察成為設計界名人。

Brush Back ： 在職業棒球裡，是指投手故意投出內角球接近打擊者頭部，逼使打擊者離開本壘板。後來被轉成「威脅」的意思。

例句 ： The reporter bushes back the congressman to disclose his scandals. 記者威脅國會議員揭發他的醜聞。

Catbird Seat ： 這是美國棒球轉播知名記者 Red Barber ，在轉播時最愛用的成語，表示居於有利位置。

例句 ： John holds the Catbird seat each time when he negotiates the renewal contract with the employer. 約翰在談判新合約時取得一個有利的位置。

Cover One's Bases ： 是指守壘員注意不讓打擊者上壘的守護動作，引伸為確保安全。

例句 ： In a hot and dry forest, the ranger has to pay extra attention to cover his bases for  any forest fire. 在又乾又熱的森裡裡，巡守員必須題注意防止森林火災。

Curve Ball ： 投手投出區球，打擊者到最後一刻發現時已揮棒落空。後來曲球被引伸為沒有突如其來的舉動。

例句 ： Marry throws her boss a curve ball to quit at the busiest period of the season. 瑪麗在旺季最忙碌的時候遞出辭呈，將了老闆一軍。

Get to First Base ：棒球術語是上一壘的意思。後來被引伸為獲得初步成功的意思。如果被使用在男女社交關係，就變成暗示在約會中「親吻」對方成功。因此就有 “Get to the second base” （上了二壘）、 “Go for extra base” （搶進下一壘）、 ”Reach home” （全壘打）等，都是暗示從親吻到上床做愛的階段性成果。班上的男生羨慕麥克在畢業舞會中與珍妮共舞時就登上了一壘。

Play Hardball ： 打硬式棒球。引伸為意志堅決不達目的誓不終止。

Knock the Cover of the Ball ： 使勁兒投球，結果球的外皮都因此剝落。引伸為努力的成果超出大家的預期。

例句 ： The workers completed the bridge construction in 9 months which knocks the cover of the ball for city council members. 工人們在 9 個月內完成了橋樑工程，讓市議員們刮目相看。

Nice Guy Finishes Last ： 這是美國 1 棒球名教練 Leo Durocher 的一句名言，大致的意思是好的球員不如狠的球員。在日常英語上被用來表「男人不壞女人不愛」的意思。

例句 ： The polite and well-mannered man who treated women like royalty realized too late that nice guys finish last. 那些彬彬有禮把女人尊為皇家貴婦的男士，發現心儀的女人已經被捷足先得時，為時已晚。

Off Base ： 指打擊上壘的球員，突然離開壘包會隨時被刺殺的危險狀況。引伸為錯誤或危險的舉止。

例句 ： If you think stop before the stop sign is a waster of time, you are way off base. 假如妳認為把遵守停車標誌的「停車再駛」規定是浪費時間的話，

Pinch-hit ： 棒球用語中代打的意思。引伸為替某人做他該做的事。

例句： Peter always asks Jane to be his pinch hit for the history class. 彼得老是請珍妮代替他上歷史課。

Play Ball ： 這是棒球主審宣布球賽開始或恢復進行的一句話。被引伸為同意加入一起開始進行某一件工作。

例句： The picket workers stop their fellow workers playing ball before the employer agrees the union's raise request. 工人糾察隊員在雇主答應工會佳新請求前，阻止工人開始工作。

Rain Check ： 棒球遇雨改期再賽時，發給觀眾的延期入場券。引伸為延期履行的承諾的意思。
