C'est la Vie — 用英語外來語來跩一下

C'est La Vie 是法文，直接翻譯成英文是 "This is life.." 。這句話是用在碰到不如意有無可奈何的事情的一種表達方式，例如： "The Dow Jones Stock Index continuously dropped in three days.." " C'est la vie, what can you do?"

英語中有許多拉丁文、法語與德語的外來語，能在日常會話或寫作中，加入幾句外來語，甚至艱澀一點的，就會顯得自己很有學問。我買到一本很有趣的英文書，書名是 " The Instant Intellectual: The Quick & Easy Guide to Sounding Smart & Cultured." 翻譯成中文就是「速成知識貴族：如何讓人以為自己很有知識與教養的速成之道。」

以下就從這本書找出一些有意思的字，讓大家用來變成「英文的知識貴族」，可以睥睨朋友、同僚。

• Achilles' Heel 致命弱點
  這是希臘荷馬史詩（Homer's Epic Poem）裏的一個故事。Achilles 是希臘神話中的勇士，小時候媽媽把用雙手抓住他的腳跟，把他浸泡在Styx河中，凡是被河水浸泡到的部分，就會擁有無堅不摧刀槍不入的神力。但是被媽媽雙手抓住的兩腳腳跟，因為沒有碰到神水，因而卻留下一個鮮為人知的致命弱點：他的腳跟。只要攻擊他的腳跟，他就神力全失因此喪命。
  
  後人就把 Achilles' Heel （阿基力的腳跟）當作「致命的弱點」。例如：Irresistence to the sex offer is John's Achelle's Hell, even he paid dear price several times for that. （不能抗拒色誘，是約翰的致命弱點，即使是為此付出高昂代價數次後仍不改其志。）

• Ad Hominen Attack  人身攻擊
  Ad hominen 是拉丁文" To the Man" 的意思，所以 Ad Hominen Attack 就是人身攻擊。例如：In the end of nomination campaign, Donald Trump engaged lots of ad hominen attacks against Hilary Clinton trying to increase the marginal support. 川普在競選總統時，一再訴諸人身攻擊對手希拉蕊，以爭取邊緣選票的支持。

• Amerika 這樣的美國
  Amerika：這是20世紀初期的德裔小說家 Franz Kafka （中譯：卡夫卡）的小說家對美國的稱謂，字裡行間有貶抑的斯人斯土的意思。1987美國ABC電視網播出一部迷你影集，片名也叫Amerika，劇情描述美國被俄軍佔領統治的慘狀。
  
  例句："Amerika" is so-called a free land, but nothing is really free there. 這個美國自稱是自由之邦，但是住在那兒卻貴得要命。

• Angry Young Man 憤青
  Angry Young Man：憤怒的年輕人。這是20世紀中期英國文學界對當時不滿現實，不斷攻擊既得利益（establishment）階層的年輕工人的稱呼。中國大陸最近也有所謂的「憤青」的稱呼，是指在網際網路上具有強烈民族主義意識的年輕網民。「憤青」一詞已經被維基百科收納，英文為 Fenqing，簡稱 FQ。「憤青」後來卻慢慢演變成一個貶抑詞，如今有人說對方是憤青，那多半是帶有諷刺的意味，如果罵得不含蓄就直接打出「糞青」兩字。
  
  "Angry young man, you'd better pay more attention to keeping your paycheck, instead of criticizing the establishment.", the manager advises his staff. 一位經理勸告年輕的同事「年輕人，別老是批評社會既得利益階層，還是保住自己的飯碗要緊。」

• Avant-Garde 前衛的
  Avant-Garde：前衛的、先進的，相等於英語的 Vangaurd。例句：The Greenwich Village are the origins of avant-garde music, arts and fashions.

• Carpe Diem 把握今朝
  Carpe Diem 是出自於羅馬詩人 Horce 得一首詩的最後一句 "carpe diem quam minimum credula postero" 英文的意思是 "Seize the day, trusting as little as possible in the future" （勿信未來，把握今朝）。例句："Carpe Diem, play hard as much as you can, who knows what will happen tommorrow" (今朝有酒今朝醉，何嘗一滴到九泉）。

• Carte Blanche 空白支票
  Cart Blanche 英文直譯為 Blank Card 或 Blank Check （空白的卡片、支票），意指沒有限制的授權。花旗銀行最頂級的信用卡就叫做 Diners Club Carte Blanche。例句：In order to save the save the depression-ridden US economy, the President-elect Obama will give a carte blanche to his new Secretary of Treasury Department Tim Geithner to do whatever needed.  （為了要挽救陷入蕭條的美國經濟，總統當選人奧巴馬給予新財政部長 Tim Geithner無限制的制授權。

• Categorical Imperative 普世價值
  Categorical Imperative 是出自於德國哲學家康德（Kant）的論述，直譯為至高無上的準則。例句：Treat humanity as an end, never a means is a categorical imperative being complied with by any contemporary government. （把人道精神當作是目的，而非手段是現代政府必須遵循的普世價值。）

• Cogito Ego, Sum 我思故我在
  Cogito Ego Sum 是拉丁語直譯為英文是大家所熟知的 I think, so I am。這是16~17世紀哲學家迪卡爾（René Descartes）得一句名言。

• Coup de Grace 慈悲而致命的一擊
  Coup de Grace 是法文直譯為英文 Merciful (Graceful) death blow, always final. 在日常使用中的意思是" A deathblow delivered to end the misery of a mortally wounded victim" (給予致命的一擊以結束一個無法挽救的生命使其不再受苦) ，或者可以衍伸為 " A finishing stroke or decisive event." (導致敗亡的一個決定性因素)。
  
  例句：Euthanasia is a legal coupe de grace to end the life of  dying creatures. 安樂死是合法的慈悲殺人行為用來結束一個垂死的生命。 
  
  例句：The financial tsunami is regarded as the coupe de grace of the fall of many time honored financial institutes deeply trapped bysubprime loans. 金融海嘯被認為是導致那些深陷次級房貸的老牌金融機構倒閉的關鍵因素。
  
  

• Coup d’etat 政變
  這個字在英文媒體上常看到，是指政權因為反叛揭竿而起被推翻。
  
  例句：The so-called “Color revolution” in the Africa and Middle East had overthrown many tyranny regimes. 在北非和中東的所謂「顏色革命」推翻了許多獨裁政權。

   

• Cross the Rubicon 破釜沈舟背水一戰的決心
  Rubicon是義大利北部的一條河，分隔了古代的羅馬帝國（Roman Empire）和高盧（Gaul）區域。紀元前49年凱薩（Julius Caesar）將軍違背了羅馬帝國元老院（Senate）毅然決然越過了Rubicon河征服高盧，造成了羅馬帝國長期的內戰。
  
  例句：Steve Jobs crossed the Rubicon to leave the Apple Computer which he founded, and established his own company NEXT. 賈伯斯背水一戰離開自己創立的蘋果電腦，設立了一家名為NEXT的新公司。
  
  

• De Facto 事實上的 De Jure 法律上的
  De Facto 和De Jure 是拉丁文，是指「依照事實」和「依照法律」的狀況。

  例句：Windows software is owned by Mircrosoft de jure, but it is taken as one of the de facto standards in computing industries. 視窗軟體法律上被視為微軟公司所有，但事實上卻被視為電腦產業的標準之一。

• Esprit de corps 團隊精神
  Esprit de corps 是法文，意思是「團隊精神」

  例句：The winning of the game is always decided by esprit de corps of the team instead of skill. 決定比賽勝負的往往是團隊精神而非高超的技巧。

• Fait Accompli 既成事實
  Fait Accompli 是法文字，等於英文的”Accomplished Facts”

  例句：Arguing with the fait accompli is just like crying over spilt milk。爭辯既成事實等於想收回波出去的水。

• Force Majeure 不可抗力
  Force Majeure 是拉丁文，指非人力可避免的意外
  
  例句：Defendants are waived from the loss claim arisen from force majeure natural disaster. 被告無須對因為不可抗力的天災所引起的損失負責。
